GRAP 2022 // Week 6 // Readings // Kelly (Lecture Slides)
Five canons of rhetoric:
- Invention // Invention: process of inventing the argument/proposition
- Arrangement // Disposito: organising the argument/proposition (e.g. order, sequence) for greatest effect
- Style // Elocutio: ways of stylistically deploying the argument/proposition for greatest effect
- Memory // Memoria: comes into play during the delivery – process of learning and memorising the speech for effective delivery
- Delivery // Actio: presenting the argument/proposition to the audience for greatest effect (e.g. in speaking: whether loud, quiet, tone, pace – for Aristotle, these were 'dynamics, harmony and rhythm')
Buchanan (1985, p.4): the relationship between design and rhetoric as the invention of argument, argues that communication is central to all design, as it is to rhetoric.
"Furthermore, as with rhetoric, the subject matter of design is not determinate; there are 'alternative resolutions' and designers are always dealing 'with matters of choice, with things that may be other than they are' ('Design and the New Rhetoric' 1995, p.25)
In other words, designers are facilitators who shape social processes and 'design, conceived as rhetorical argument makes available and advocates certain positions for individuals to take up' (Kelly, 2013, p. 256)
